RiseSmart Adds Longtime GlaxoSmithKline Executive Dan Phelan to Its Strategic Advisory Council

Human Resources veteran joins a growing roster of industry leaders advising RiseSmart as it continues to disrupt the outplacement industry.

SILICON VALLEY, California, 16 February 2011 –
RiseSmart, the leading provider of next-generation outplacement solutions, today announced the addition to its Strategic Advisory Council of Dan Phelan, senior advisor to the CEO at GlaxoSmithKline and member of the board of directors and the Management Development and Compensation Committee of TE Connectivity.

During his more than 30 years with GlaxoSmithKline, Phelan has held key leadership roles in several areas of the company. He was the senior vice president of human resources for 14 years. He also served as vice president of personnel for the U.S. Pharmaceutical Division, senior vice president of operations and administration for the global research and development organization, and from 2008 to 2010 served as chief of staff with global responsibility for a number of vital departments, including human resources and information technology.

An accomplished business professional, Phelan was the recipient of the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from Rutgers School of Law-Camden. He has written on public sector collective bargaining, conflict management and unionization in higher education. Most recently he was co-author of “Picking the Right Insider for CEO Succession,” published in the Harvard Business Review.

“The continued additions of experienced HR thought leaders to our Strategic Advisory Council supports the ever-growing notion that offboarding has to have a solid technology component in order to remain competitive in the economy today,” said Sanjay Sathe, founder and CEO of RiseSmart. “Dan’s decision to join our council stems from the pervasive idea that RiseSmart’s business model is the future of outplacement and these HR influencers want to be a part of making that change a reality.”

Phelan furthers his passion for helping people find jobs through his membership on the CEO Council for Growth of Select Greater Philadelphia, an organization that focuses on initiatives designed to stimulate jobs and new business opportunities in the Philadelphia area. He has served on the Dean’s Advisory Council of Rutgers School of Law-Camden and was elected to the Rutgers University Board of Overseers in 2009. He has been a lecturer on comparative corporate governance at the Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations Executive Master’s Program.

“RiseSmart eliminates the inefficiencies of the traditional outplacement model and focuses on what matters most – getting transitioning workers into jobs as quickly as possible,” Phelan said. “Instead of the outdated idea of offering grief counseling and office space to conduct your job search, RiseSmart gets directly to the point by delivering targeted job leads, updated cover letters and resumes, and tips on how to improve social networking to land a job. I joined RiseSmart’s Strategic Advisory Council to be part of an organization that helps stimulate our economy and improve the lives of transitioning workers and their previous employers.”

Prior to joining GlaxoSmithKline, Phelan served for six years as an officer on active duty and in the reserves with the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. He also worked as an associate in the labor department of Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxwell and Hippel in Philadelphia. He earned a master’s degree in higher education administration from The Ohio State University and a law degree from Rutgers School of Law-Camden.
