Stigma & Isolation of Special Needs Parents in the Workplace

Ruth L. Fischbach PhD of the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC) recently completed one of the largest studies of its kind looking at how and why #stigma affects families.

Although her focus was on parents of children on the #Autism spectrum, I believe the findings have incredible applicability to all #specialneedsparents and specifically in the #workplace.

The significant #isolation, how stigma can be extremely damaging not only to the personal identity and well-being of the individual but by extension to his or her family; especially social isolation.

Almost 80 percent of the #parents said stigma had been extremely, very or somewhat difficult in their lives.

Think for a moment about companies that celebrate “Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day”.
